Making Memories: Gnome/ Fairy Houses

A couple week's ago several posts started popping up across a variety of the parenting sites I visit. Gnome or Fairy houses seemed to be popping up in Overland Park, no one knew quite where they came from, but they were on a walking trail for everyone to enjoy. Originally people mentioned finding two and later finding three, but after our visit we believe there is even more. The girls might not be into gnomes, but they are very into fairies so I knew this was something we had to go check out.

So Sunday evening we headed out. The trail is located directly behind DeAnna Rose Farmstead so we parked there and then headed to the trail. We found the trail and headed to the right, it was only a few minutes before we came across the Firefly Forest sign. We were a bit confused because from what we had seen online we thought there were houses near the sign, but couldn't find any.

We decided to continue on the trail and soon came across the first two houses. They were adorable. Decorated both outside and inside, and with multiple messages of sharing kindness. People had left small notes and trinkets in both of the houses, and one was even complete with a pumpkin by the door. Both homes were completely decorated from crystals hanging from the ceiling to beds and nightstands. No detail was neglected, these homes were perfect. After thoroughly examining these two houses we continued on.

We had walked for several minutes before discovering the third house. This house was built into a tree. A small red door opened to share the small details located inside. It like the others had many trinkets inside and looked the perfect place for a fairy to reside. It was complete with a flag, welcome message, lantern, and even a small plaque above the door. Someone had clearly put a lot of thought into this tiny home.

We walked a bit farther but since it was getting dark and we were unsure if there were more we turned around and headed back to the car. It wasn't until we got home and saw some more posts that we discovered we had missed two of the houses that we would have had to follow the path under the road in order to find.  We had been told there were 3 and we found three, but as near as I can tell from our experience and other's pictures, as of today there are at least 5 homes to discover. It is a very easy walk on a paved path and the houses are easy to spot. It was definitely an enjoyable outing and both Larry and I came home with the desire to create our own fairy houses and add it to the Firefly Forest. I hope others do this too and that it will continue to grow. I think not knowing where all of these are coming from adds to the magic and enchantment of it all. I hope we can return and see the other houses we missed and hopefully some new ones as well. This is a great little outing for families in the area, and in the spring when Deanna Rose is open again it would be a great add on to an afternoon trip.

According to the KMBC website, there are the two homes we missed.  (source: http://www.kmbc.com/news/kansas-city/gnome-homes-pop-up-in-overland-park/-/11664182/21579282/-/ayngy9z/-/index.html ) They look just as adorable as the three we did see.

Five on Friday: What I'm Doing

1. What I'm reading...

I am currently reading Love, Rosie the entire story is told via e-mails and letters between the main characters. I have read several books written in this format and I really enjoy them.  This story focuses on two best friends who grow up together, and stay close even after one moves away. The entire world thinks they are meant for each other, but they aren't quite convinced yet. This is a book I checked out at the library a couple weeks ago. I am not even sure how I stumbled upon it, but I am definitely glad I did.

2. What I'm watching...

I honestly haven't watched much TV at all this week. It has been a very busy week with not much down time.  What little I have watched has been Halloween specials. I definitely love all the holiday specials from Halloween through Christmas. Of course this week I have watched Spookley a couple times. It is definitely one of my favorite Halloween movies. In addition to those I am recording several things. I need to get caught up on The Voice and Agents of Shield. I think I am also a few episodes behind on How I Met Your Mother.

3. What I'm smelling...

I still think my marshmallows over a fire is my favorite candle, but I have also been burning lots of pumpkin and autumn scented candles the last couple weeks. I have also been able to have my windows open a lot and frequently smell leaves and fire pits. I really do love the smell of fall.

4.  What I'm listening to...

I have been listening to music a lot this week. It definitely helps me relax, and when I need time to think about something music is a way for me to clear my brain so I can focus on the task at hand. As you know from my previous post I have been listening to Ronnie Eaton. I've also been listening to a variety of country music. Toby Keith's new album just came out and I'm excited to hear it.

5. What I'm feeling...

This week I am really working on strategies to stay calm and not feel overwhelmed. Since my concussion it has been easier for things to start overwhelming me as I can't process multiple things at once. I am trying a couple different things right now that help me sort through things, process them, deal with what needs dealt with, and let go of the rest. It's only been a few days, but I can already tell how much this is going to help.

As always I would love to hear from you. Leave me a comment or shoot me an e-mail, and don't forget to subscribe to the blog.

The Best You, That You Can Be

I think it's safe to say I have been having a rough time lately. I am adjusting to all the changes and additions to my life, and instead of it leaving me fulfilled it's left me completely overwhelmed. I am moving from one activity to the next without ever stopping for some downtime. Previously this wouldn't have been a problem. I gathered energy from being surrounded by people. I loved always being on the go. Downtime wasn't something I needed or enjoyed, but that is no longer the case. It was a foreign concept to me and something I didn't really understand. So when I started feeling overwhelmed I wasn't sure why. I kept thinking I was just adjusting to being back at work part time, or adjusting to Ashley being in school, or adjusting to the accommodations I have to make around the house etc. It just seemed like the normal adult life stuff that everyone deals with. Parents are always joking about not even going to the bathroom alone. I couldn't even really identify what the problem was, it was just normal adult stuff... right?

A couple weeks ago I did an interview with Ronnie Eaton, and during our talk I realized maybe it wasn't quite as normal as I thought. We were discussing Ronnie's latest album and a couple of the songs that really stuck out to me. Though I loved all of them, there was one song I couldn't get out of my mind. "Smile and Nod" ran through my head all day every day. It was like the song was reading the thoughts straight from my brain. It was expressing exactly what I was feeling. When talking to Ronnie I asked him what inspired him to write the song and he confessed it was a bit different from the others because although the other songs were about a variety of characters who had played rolls in his life, this song was about him. It expressed the feelings he was having. He started saying I might not understand, but that his mind is going all the time. There isn't a second that he isn't thinking about something, or analyzing something, or trying to figure out what others are thinking. At which point my thoughts were.... "Wait! What??? You mean everyone isn't like that?" He went on to explain how this had gotten him into tough spots because since his mind is always working, he assumes everyone else's does the same. So if he is in a room with someone and they are quiet, he assumes they are thinking about something, and if they won't tell him what it is, he automatically starts thinking he has done something wrong, and begins rehashing all of his comments and/or actions to figure out exactly what he did wrong. When he can't figure it out he still automatically blames himself. He assumes he must be failing in some way.  Hmmm.... check... yep, I definitely do that too, and for both of us it ends in the same results. We over think situations, we over analyze, and we walk around worrying about doing things wrong. This doesn't help us at all. Instead quite the opposite... it makes us unable to be our carefree selves. It prevents us from having the fun we want to have. Which then bothers the people we are with, to which we respond by over analyzing, and the cycle starts over. Rinse... Wash... Repeat.

So where does that leave us? Well I have now identified the problem, but I have absolutely no idea how to solve it. First it was impportant for me to realize that not everyone is like this. Not everyone is thinking things all the time, and not always am I doing something wrong. Sometimes when I ask what someone is thinking and they say nothing, it really is because they aren't thinking anything. So that solves problem 1. Now onto problem 2 after some time thinking about my life I realized what I was really craving was some alone time. Some down time to stop the thoughts that were constantly running through my head. I didn't have the time to deal with them, which meant I couldn't stop them, and that meant that nothing I was doing was getting 100% of me because these thoughts were always occupying my mind. This was a very odd realization for me. I had never craved alone time before, and I wasn't even sure what it meant. Was it fair for me to want alone time? Should I be using my free time for myself or should I be using it to get the million things I needed to accomplish done? Was it selfish of me to take some down time for myself?

So first I had to admit to myself that I couldn't keep doing this. I can't keep going and going to the point of being completely overwhelmed and exhausted. Something had to give, and not being able to keep up with all of it didn't make me a bad person. It didn't mean I failed. It was okay to not be able to do everything. So after moving on from that I had to address my idea that alone time is not selfish. In the last couple days I think I have finally realized that down time doesn't only benefit me, but it benefits everyone. It can't be selfish because everyone benefits from it. If I can take sometime for myself to have down time, or time to accomplish the things I want to accomplish then when I am with others I can devote my time more fully to them because I am not distracted thinking by a million other things. By taking this time I can quiet all or at least some of the thoughts. I can be more relaxed in a situation because I am not stressing about the hundreds of things I need to get done, instead I have already dealt with those things so they are no longer a worry. This is something I have considered multiple times. I keep saying I need to take some time for myself, but then I never actually do it. Well this time it has to be different. This time I have finally realized it isn't selfish. Not only does it benefit me, but it benefits everyone around me. It might mean I have to give up a little bit of together time with people I care about, but it means that when I am with them I can be 100% with them, and I think that's ultimately better for everyone.

Now the easy part is over. I have identified the problem, and proposed a solution, but now I actually have to put that plan into action. I can't say it will be easy. I can't assume the plan won't need reevaluated and adjusted, but I can say that I am trying. I can say that it is something I want to change. I don't want to be that person any more. I don't want the me that is always worried, always thinking, always analyzing.I need that person to step aside, so that the fun, happy, and carefree me can come out. That's the me I like. That's the me my loved ones want to see, and it's the type of life I deserve. Everyone deserves that, and no it isn't selfish. It's okay, and in the end it's the only way to make myself a better person, which benefits everyone.

This is a blog I wrote with mixed thoughts. Originally I started writing for me. It was step one in making time for myself. However, the more I wrote the more I started thinking about putting it out there. For me it doesn't matter, for me writing it was the important part... but then I thought.... if I feel this way and if Ronnie feels this way then we probably aren't the only ones. So today I am putting this out for them. I want them to know they aren't alone. I want them to know it's okay to be overwhelmed, and it's okay to take times for themselves. Being the best them they can be really is what's best. So to those of you who are reading this and thinking you might feel some of those same things I want to say, "Be strong... You can do it... and if you can't then that's perfectly okay too! Take some time for you. Time to think. Time to regroup, and time to refill your batteries. Then and only then will you be the best you, the one you deserve to be."

My Thursday Favorites

My Thursday favorites for this week are very random, which isn't at all unusual for me. So without further ado here they are...

1.Reading with Ashley

Ashley is working on reading at school so every night we sit down and read her books before I read her one at bedtime. She is doing really well with this and I love getting to share it with her.

2. Pumpkin Doughnuts

I seriously love  pumpkin and this week our Hy-Vee had pumpkin doughnut holes. I was a little skeptical but bought a thing of them anyway, and they are fabulous! Seriously they might be my new favorite.

3. A Solier's Memoir

I have posted about this song a few times previously, but the official video was released this week on YouTube. I am blessed to call Joe a friend, and this song and video are amazing. This is definitely a message that needs to be heard and I encourage all of you to share it.

4. Sweater Shoes

Okay these may not be the most stylish shoes ever, but they are amazing for work. I am on my feet most of the day and these keep my feet from being sore, and also keep me warm.

5. Turkey Roll Up

I had been struggling with what to take to work for lunch as I don't have access to a microwave and don't really get a lunch break. I can eat in my room, but that means it needs to be something simple. I found a recipe for a roll up and I changed it a bit and have taken it the last two days. They are super yummy. I plan to mix up what I put in them, but the basic list is below.

Flatout Multi- Grain with Flaxseed flatbread
Turkey
Alfalfa sprouts
Arugula
Red Onion
Cheese (I did this one day and not the next)
Alouette Garlic and Herb Spread

Thank you for joining me this week. Please check out the blog hop and link up. I would love to hear from all of you. Please leave me a comment and hit the subscribe button!

Make It Monday: Tree Art

A few months ago I decided that I wanted to do an art project and create something to hang in the large open space over my couch. After many hours of searching on Pinterest I found these two projects that I loved, and decided to combine the two ideas.

I purchased the canvases on sale at Hobby Lobby and then the project began.

First we tea stained all four canvases. This took multiple coats to get it the color I wanted. I also had some help from my little one on this. (please tell me I am not the only one who now has the Wonder Years song stuck in my head.)

Next I used a leaf punch and cut multiple leaves from a variety of different scrapbook papers.

Once they were cut I painted the tree and began adding the leaves with mod podge.

Last I used Mod Podge to cover the entire canvas and then added on the multi-colored buttons.

The completed project. It is far from perfect, but I still love it, and am glad it is something Ashley and I did together.

This is now hanging on the wall over my couch. I am working on a few more things for that wall as well, and hope to be sharing some of them with you soon.

What creative things have you been working on lately? Leave me a comment I would love to hear from you!

Silly Sunday: I'm Back Again

I hate that I haven't been writing or blogging much lately. Life has been a bit insane, but I have definitely missed it and am happy to be back. Hopefully this time I will get to stay and put things out a bit more regularly.

Instead or writing and in depth and serious post today I want to share some of the things that have made me smile over the last few weeks. So without further ado I present Silly Sunday.

Silly Jokes:

Ashley's favorite joke lately: "Where does a pebble sit? In a rocking chair."

Two of my brother's silly jokes: "What do you call a cow with no legs? Ground beef" "What do you call a cow with a twitch? Beef jerky."
